    Voltron Monsterpocalypse Initial Thoughts

Today I got an advance copy of Voltron Battle Miniatures game. The set is a stand alone set that is compatible with Monsterpocalypse. Included in the set are 22 figures. 1 Voltron figure, 5 Voltron Lion figures, 5 Voltron Galaxy Garrison Cruiser, 1 Lo-Tron, 4 Robeasts and 5 Lo-Tron force Skull Ship figures. Also included are 4 health tracking tokens, 4 dice tracking tokens, a double sided game mat and 1 full color rulebook.

The map smaller than the normal Monsterpocalypse map and measures roughly 2′ x 2′. There is no building placement or strategy in this game as all the “terrain” elements are right on the map. On each side are rules references for each corresponding side so thumbing through the rulebook to look up a special ability is not require nor is checking the base for special abilities. There are elements on the map that take place of your standard Monsterponcalypse health tracker (the one that comes in starters) and takes place of requiring each player to have their own set of dice. Cardboard token are used to keep track of life and dice pools on top of the map. The downside to this method is that the tokens can easily be knocked out of place.

    Power Rangers RPN for Monsterpocalyse

Yesterday I saw the latest incarnation of Power Rangers at Wal*Mart. The basic figures contained a miniature version of their respective zords. I immediately picked up one of each ranger with the intention of using only the small figures as Monsterpocalypse customs. It’s a good thing my daughter loves Power Rangers so the action figures didn’t go to waste.

    Here are the results.

    Gaming, yet not gaming…

This month I’ve been doing a lot of organizing for games, mainly Monsterpocalypse and World of Warcraft miniatures. Both are really fun games and been getting a lot of play locally. It’s always cool to see folks enjoying an event that I’ve set-up but hopefully I’ll get some play time as well. I’m finding my playing skills have declined as I’ve not really had time to know how to make my forces work.

      They look fantastic mate!
I was wondering (as someone who will probably repaint his martian faction) did you undercoat first or just paint over the top?
Was there any other preparation involved?
      Cheers,
      Ben.

Thanks for the kind comments. I did prime them first but before that I made sure I washed them very well with soap and water.

Monsterpocalypse Series 1: Rise Strategy Guide Review

I just got my copy of the Monsterpocalypse strategy guide today something I’ve been looking forward to getting since the release. It is 64 pages from cover to cover and printed in the same magazine format as Privateer’s bi-monthly magazine No-Quarter. It retails for $14.99.

The guide is split up into various sections, first a checklist then some general game strategies. Next are strategies for buildings and what factions/agendas benefit the most from them. After buildings each faction gets their own section showcasing all the stats of each model along with tactical tips. At the end of each faction section are tips on what building work well with your faction, sample army lists and strategies for playing with more than 1 one monster.

The book also includes strategies for 10 different maps including the map including in this guide. After the map section there’s a section that lists all the abilities categorized by their type similar to the way the quick reference sheet for each of the factions are but all in one place. In addition to this are tips and uses with each ability and what figures in the set have them.

The next section is dedicated to multi-monster strategies in terms of multi-monster power attacks and dice efficiency between the two. It later expands to mixing monsters of different factions but from neighboring agendas. The guide gives tactical tips for various team ups.

There’s a two page section in the guide that gives non-tactical tips but tips on the care and repair for you figure.

Toward the end there is a small puzzle similar to that featured in No-Quarter for Warmachine and Hordes that gives you a situation and a challenge to solve te situation. The answer is later give at the end of the book.

The most interesting part of the book that I found was the solo play rules. In this scenario you will only play units where your objective is to kill the monster before it destroys all the buildings. The map is set up with 12 buildings while you get to choose any 15 units with no penalty for spawning units of a different faction. The monster acts on its own according to a flow chart described in the rules.

The second most interesting part in the guide for me are previews for the next set called “I Chomp NY”. This set will feature 12 new monster 4 new buildings and 24 new units. Some units will come with new abilities. Concept art is shown for all 12 monsters. G.U.A.R.D. get Laser Knight and Nova, Lords of Cthul get Mogroth and Ulgloth, Martian Menace get Phobos-7 and the Tharsis Station, Planet Eaters get Xavor and Zorog, Terraraurs get Rakadon and Pteradax, and last but not least Shadow Sun Syndicate get Zor Magna and Zor Voltis.

Last but not least is an “Organized Play Survival Guide”. This section includes tips and strategies for various organized play formats from Sealed to Drafting.

Over all I really enjoyed the strategy guide. For a 64 page book it may not seem like a lot for $14.99 but you do get a lot of usable content and a nice map to play on. I highly recommend it for any Monsterpocalypse player.

Thanks for the review. I thought this book was a waste of money, but now that I actually know exactly whats in it – particularly, the maps and solo play – i’m definitely gonna go out and grab this.

GenCon 2008 Privateer Press Report and Photos

Privateer Press was the busiest booth throughout the whole con. I was fortunate enough to get early access on Thursday and immediately headed to the Privateer Press booth. There were folks lined up for up to 2 hours that day to get the pre-releases and convention exclusives. Pre-released there was Warmachine: Legends the final chapter in the current Warmachine story arc. This book introduced 2 new factions for each Warcaster as well as new character warjacks and units and a new unit type called a Warcaster attachment. At the end of a book a new faction is disclosed called the Retribution.

Privateer Press also pre-released Kraye, Zerokova, Epic Severious, Epic Gorshade, Ol’ Rowdy, Salvation of Menoth, Cankerworm, Drago, Epic Eyriss and Anastatia for Warmachine and pre-released Slag Troll, Tharn Ravager White Mane, and Victor Pendrake for Hordes.

The biggest pre-release was Monsterpocalpyse. A limited sample was pre-released in the form of starters, monster boosters and unit boosters. 1 monster from each faction along with I believe half of the faction units and 4 buildings where included in this sample. Privateer limited the purchase of 1 starter per day with a max of 2 for the whole convention. Everyday except Thursday they would sell out of their allocation of starters by noon and on Sunday they ran out completely of starters to sell.

The demo area for Monsterpocalpse was very busy with folks crowding around just to see what this game is about. On Sunday you had to get in line to get a demo because it was so busy .

Privateer Press also made a convention release model of a Trolkin Kilt Lifter. This model sold out on Thursday but was made available to the public in Privateer’s online store the following Monday.

Hey, I didn’t know you went to Comiccon!!

So this means I get to keep the extra comic I got you right?

    • Larkin Vain 1:34 pm on August 1, 2008 Permalink | Reply

I didn’t go. And yes you can keep the extra one. I found out from my brother that my ex-sister in law went with some friends of ours. I immediately told him to tell her to do a demo and get a fig for me. I even gave him the guilt trip to not forget I was fixing her computer :) She arrived last night and to my surprise she got it! :) I wasn’t sure if there was going to be any left as it was Friday night I found out she was there and there was only 2 days left in the con. So it was really like Christmas for me yesterday. :)

      Very Cool!! :)
Its good to have family contacts and they are into the hobby!! Congrats!

I noticed that you have your comicbook signed also!! That is very limited, because they were only there to sign for a few hours each day!

From what I understand there is no difference. The figure I got is the actual production figure.
