GenCon 2008 Reaper Speed Painting Competition

I entered the Reaper Speed Painting competion at GenCon this year and I was able to qualify for the Championship round that was held on Sunday of that weekend. The first picture is the miniature that qualified me for the Championships and the second picture is my entry in the Championship round. For the qualifying rounds we were given 45 minutes and for the championship round we were given 1 hour. The time limits weren’t to much of problem for me as most of my painting is speed painting. My biggest issue was the brushes we were given looked like they were chewed on. None of our brushes could really hold a point. All in all it was a lot of fun. I hope to enter again the next time I’m up there.

GenCon 2008 Wyrd Games Report and Photos

Wyrd Miniatures was there with a very impressive demo table showcasing their latest game Malifaux. The game uses Wyrd’s existing line of miniatures and groups them into different factions. The mechanic for is diceless and uses a deck of cards to resolve combats and actions. The game play seems to be very fluid. The rules are still in alpha play testing but will soon be headed for beta testing in a couple of weeks. Nathan has let me know that he is shooting for a release sometime early next year.

Eric was kind enough to let me video Malifaux in action.

GenCon 2008 Alkemy Report and Photos

Kraken Editions had a booth at GenCon and were showcasing their Alkemy game. They had several demo tables along with a special deal that if you buy a faction starter and the latest 2 waves for that faction you would get a convention exclusive figure for that faction. The convention exclusive figures were packed in small Ziploc bags and did not have any corresponding stat card for use in the game. The stat cards for these convention exclusives are available at their website. These packages were priced at $90 at the beginning of the convention and was later reduced to $65. At those prices I couldn’t resist and bought myself two factions.

The folks at Kraken was kind enough to allow me video a demo of the game.

GenCon 2008 Anima Tactics Report and Photos

The folks at Cypher Stuidos had an area to demo Anima Tactics in the Fantasy Flight booth. They had 2 demo tables and some products to sell. The biggest surprise was the English Anima RPG book. They had several pre-releases including Cordelia, Dead Moon and Konosuke.

I was able to get a video demo of the game which explains the basic mechanics and game play of Anima Tactics.

I also got to meet some folks over at Cypher studios. Kai has informed me that they are shooting for January of next year for the new rulebook and that they have gotten the molds for Okko (an different game) and that they will be casting them in the coming months.

GenCon 2008 Privateer Press Report and Photos

Privateer Press was the busiest booth throughout the whole con. I was fortunate enough to get early access on Thursday and immediately headed to the Privateer Press booth. There were folks lined up for up to 2 hours that day to get the pre-releases and convention exclusives. Pre-released there was Warmachine: Legends the final chapter in the current Warmachine story arc. This book introduced 2 new factions for each Warcaster as well as new character warjacks and units and a new unit type called a Warcaster attachment. At the end of a book a new faction is disclosed called the Retribution.

Privateer Press also pre-released Kraye, Zerokova, Epic Severious, Epic Gorshade, Ol’ Rowdy, Salvation of Menoth, Cankerworm, Drago, Epic Eyriss and Anastatia for Warmachine and pre-released Slag Troll, Tharn Ravager White Mane, and Victor Pendrake for Hordes.

The biggest pre-release was Monsterpocalpyse. A limited sample was pre-released in the form of starters, monster boosters and unit boosters. 1 monster from each faction along with I believe half of the faction units and 4 buildings where included in this sample. Privateer limited the purchase of 1 starter per day with a max of 2 for the whole convention. Everyday except Thursday they would sell out of their allocation of starters by noon and on Sunday they ran out completely of starters to sell.

The demo area for Monsterpocalpse was very busy with folks crowding around just to see what this game is about. On Sunday you had to get in line to get a demo because it was so busy .

Privateer Press also made a convention release model of a Trolkin Kilt Lifter. This model sold out on Thursday but was made available to the public in Privateer’s online store the following Monday.
